Back in 1998, we had the immense privilege of meeting Bill Buschel, a radio producer for Hellenic Public Radio – COSMOS FM in New York. His passion for Greece, and particularly our home island of Karpathos, led to an invitation to present our island’s music and poetry on his acclaimed show, Graffiti. In this episode, we remember the incredible journey—from Bill’s introduction to the Aegean Sea to a focused spotlight on Karpathos and Kassos. As Apella Nota, we were honored to share our cultural roots with an audience of over 200,000 listeners in the US. This podcast is dedicated to the memory of Bill Buschel, recognizing his deep love for Greece and our home island.

This is Bill Buschel from his radio show called ‘Graffiti’. We were invited to his program to elaborate on the special secret of Karpathos, as he described it …
The secret was the “Folk Music and Poetry of Karpathos” which we presented on his radio show on Hellenic Public Radio – COSMOS FM all the way back in 1998.
With permission from COSMOS FM we are sharing this show with you, as a tribute to Bill and to honor his life and contributions.
We are inviting you to travel back in time and enjoy this program!
Bill and his admiration for Karpathos
We will always be in awe of Bill’s incredible fly-in introduction to the Aegean Sea and its islands, as he slowly zoomed in to Karpathos and Kassos. He set the stage for us to present the folk music and poetry of our home island.
This was a rare moment of powerful words transmitted on radio, when radio listeners are captivated by the power of the human voice… in this case, Bill’s voice.
The stage was set and the journey continued with our humble efforts to share a wealth of relevant to this date information about the topic. But it was Bill’s encouragement that opened our hearts and helped us bow our heads to our culture.
We had the immense privilege of meeting Bill Buschel in 1998. His interest in our home island triggered a number of discussions, which eventually led to an invitation for us to share our thoughts and passion about the “Folk Music and Poetry of Karpathos” on his acclaimed radio show.
It was both exciting and intimidating to do so in English. We were excited about the prospect of informing a broader audience about our culture but at the same time concerned about our ability to convey the emotional aspects associated with it!
Bill… we thank you!… you made it much easier for us!
Bill and his contribution to COSMOS FM, Hellenic Public Radio
Bill, the Poet, the Storyteller & Radio Host, the World Traveller & Master of Ceremonies was a beloved, longtime volunteer member of the COSMOS FM team. His warm, deep, inviting voice is unforgettable.
Bill joined COSMOS FM in 1988 and played a significant role in shaping its English-language programming. For nearly three decades, he contributed his time, talent, and dedication to serving the station’s audience and strengthening its broadcast presence with his bi-weekly show “Graffiti”. Although not Greek by heritage, Bill embraced Hellenism with sincerity and commitment. He took pride in promoting our culture through his program.
Bill sadly passed away in February of 2026. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones and as a humble salute we dedicate this podcast to his legend. May his memory be everlasting.
As Apella Nota, it was an honor to collaborate with Bill, and we are grateful for the opportunity and privilege to share this topic with an audience of more than 200,000 listeners in the United States.
We will forever be grateful… This was a precious experience for us with an even more precious outcome. A deep and forever lasting emotional connection with the incredible heart and soul of Bill Buschel.
